Stuck for Father's Day inspiration? We've picked out 5 excellent ideas (every one of them is manageable at the last minute too!)
This summer, we're offering free currency exchange for life to any WeSwap user who gets five friends to sign up! As a result we're all a bit smitten with the number five. Here is the third in a series of blog posts where FIVE is the magic number…
According to fundivo.com, the average person spends $118 every year on Father’s Day. Using WeSwap’s (admittedly exceptional rates) that converts to around £64.
All of the following ideas for Father’s Day come well under the £64 mark and crucially, every jaunt is manageable this weekend.
1. The Bermondsey Beer Mile, Bermondsey
Craft beer is enjoying a steep growth in popularity and everybody knows dads love beer. Regional pioneers Camden Town Brewery and Greenwich-based Meantime remain the capital’s behemoths (or is that beermoths?) but the craft beer hub is actually found in Bermondsey. The borough’s eponymous ‘beer mile’ houses six of London’s most fashionable microbreweries. Headline act Kernel (who have been there six years) and several others are closed on a Sunday so this one’s a Saturday trip.
2. RIB ride, The River Thames
The Thames provides a unique view of London - one that many long-standing residence have never even experienced. The city cruise is popular with tourists but frankly, is unlikely to be a Father’s Day winner. In fact, ignore all the other options and look out for anything RIB (Ridged Inflatable Boat). This is the closest thing central London has got to a white knuckle ride and you’ll be kitted out with a waterproof jacket, a life jacket and goggle-style visors. This is sure to get the heart pumping!
3. Bekonscot Model Village and Railway, Bekonscot
For a lot of men, a curious thing happens once fatherhood has arrived: they begin to ‘do a Benjamin Button’ and revert back to childhood. With over 80 years of history, this model village spans 1.5 beautifully maintained acres of English countryside. It is wonderfully quaint and quintessentially English. Oh, and it has model trains! The £9.80 entry fee also goes to charity. Nice touch.
4. Stonehenge, Wiltshire.
For those dads more in touch with their spiritual side, Stonehenge is the perfect impromptu trip. The stones themselves are at the heart of the densest complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred burial mounds. Need some inspiration to set the alarm early on Saturday morning? This was taken from Stonehenge.co.uk: “It is an hour before sunrise, that special time when the Earth seems to hold her breath in anticipation of the appearance of her lover, the Sun.”
5. Home-cooking and walk in the park, anywhere (with a supermarket).
Everyone knows the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach - dads fall within that classification too. Get down to the supermarket, buy a few steaks, a couple of Sunday newspapers, a bottle of red and a selection of ales… you now have the ingredients of a Father’s Day to remember. A light, post-food, post-nap stroll around the park wouldn’t go amiss either. Thoughtful and easy.
